Gen. Robert L. Van Antwerp, P.E., F.SAME, USA, the planned October 23 inactivation of the USACE Gulf Region Division. The provisional division was established less than a year following the launch of Operation Iraqi Freedom and since has spearheaded the reconstruction effort in Iraq. Although the division’s headquarters will inactivate, its remaining two districts—the Gulf Region District and Gulf Region South District—will continue to support the Iraq reconstruction mission.

“From the day the division stood up on Jan. 25, 2004, you have been helping to rebuild a war-torn nation that had few essential services,” Gen. Van wrote in his e-mail, distributed to Corps employees. “Today, you have completed more than 4,600 projects that are providing electricity, clean water, transportation, police and fire stations, medical care, educational opportunities and—most importantly—hope, to the people of Iraq.”

Gen. Van added that the USACE mission in Iraq would continue, though under a slightly different structure, and that the infrastructure created by Gulf Region Division will support a brighter Iraqi future. Additionally, in response to the growing war effort there, a second engineer district will be established in Afghanistan, the Afghanistan Engineer District South.
