SAME 2011 Small Business Conference: Third Day
Wednesday, Nov. 3o- The third and final day of the SAME 2011 Small Business Conference (SBC) was all about being “in the know” as attendees were treated to a day full of insider tips and breakout sessions with Q&A panel discussions on federal contract procurement. SBC attendees also became familiarized with the industry’s finest at the Awards Luncheon where exemplary professionals and companies were recognized for their outstanding small business advocacy and performance. The 2011 SAME Small Business Awards were presented by SAME Executive Director Robert D. Wolff.
The day commenced with the NAVFAC, AFCEE & Air National Guard Business Opportunity Briefings, where Rear Adm. Kevin R. Slates discussed the newly realigned goals of the NAVFAC Small Business Program for the upcoming year. He also informed attendees of NAVFAC’s subcontracting plan for large businesses. When it comes to increasing small business participation, Slates said “we are always looking for more competition and new sources.”
Breakout sessions of the day included Briefings by Army and Air Force Engineer Centers & Agencies, Middle East Business Opportunities, Special Programs: Disabled Veterans, Women Owned and 8 (a), Tips on Competing for NAVFAC and AFCEE Small Business Contracts and lastly, Joint Ventures and Strategic Partnerships.
At the Special Programs: Disabled Veterans, Women Owned and 8 (a) session, the Small Business Act served as one of the focus topics. Pamela Mazza and Dean Koppel fielded questions regarding the latest and upcoming regulations concerning small businesses.
Small businesses competing for NAVFAC and AFCEE contracts jotted down insider tips from Veneece McNeley, Director of NAVFAC’s Small Business Program Office and Grace Elizalde, AFCEE’s Small Business Programs Small Business Specialist. McNeley shared NAVFAC’s Business Line Acquisition Strategies including Capital Improvements Acquisition and Environmental Acquisition. According to McNeley, market research and implementation success comes from “focusing on the local levels.”
