SAME Hosts Engineer Warfighting Workshop in San Diego

 U.S. Marine Corps and Naval officers, enlisted personnel and industry leaders gathered to attend the Engineer Warfighting Workshop in San Diego, Calif. on Oct. 27. The workshop, hosted by the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), was held in conjunction with the Marine Corps Engineer Association (MCEA) 2011 Reunion Awards Banquet.

With approximately 83 attendees, the daylong event featured briefings including United States Marine Corps (USMC) Warrior Briefs and Seabee Warrior Briefs. Panel discussions allowed attendees to gain insight on such topics as Contractors on the Battlefield and Future of Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) Engineers. Additionally, perspectives were presented by the Engineer Battalion Commander and the Seabee Battalion Commander. The workshop started with a continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m. followed by welcome remarks from Robert D. Wolff, Ph.D., P.E., F.SAME, SAME Executive Director. The morning keynote speaker was Col. James Flowers, USMC, Marine Expeditionary Force/G7.

The discussions and briefings focused on addressing the USMC combat engineer force structure, policy and training, and recent experiences by USMC engineer and Seabee units in Afghanistan. Rear Adm. Mark A. Handley, P.E., CEC, USN, Commander, First Naval Construction Division and Naval Construction Forces Command, shared his expertise as the keynote speaker.
